Introduction

The name of our mission is Mission San Gabriel Arcangel . It was built on September 8,1771.Father Pedro Cambon,Father Angl Somera, and Father Jose Serra. It is located at 120 miles north of San Diego in the San Miguel Valley,9 miles east of central Los Angeles on a hill near a stream. Our mission was built because Spanish missionaries wanted to convert the Native Americans to Catholicism. The Spanish King also wanted to claim more land  for Spain. They wanted the Native Californians to support Spains colony.

Hardships and Changes to the Mission
The Mission Today

Today the huge city of Los Angeles surrounds Mission San Gabriel Arcangel. Many visitors came to see Mission San Gabriel Arcangel's fortress-style church, and it's museum, buildings, gardens, and campunario. The mission system ended when Mexico fought Spain and won. They won in 1821 but the war started in 1810. They fought for eleven years. The Mexican government thought that the missions weren't needed anymore and the Native Americans shouldn't be forced to live in the mission. The land was given to the people in the Mexican governement.

The missions changed California in many different ways. The Spanish missionaries brought ideas and skills to California such as making cloth, soap, and adobe bricks. They also changed California's economy from hunter gatherer to farming or agricultural. They also brought Catholic beliefs and religion, the Spanish language, and new technologies. They brought horses to California and the missions influenced they way our buildings look (architecture).
