Serra. It is located at 120 miles north of San Diego in the San Miguel
Valley,9 miles east of central Los Angeles on a hill near a stream. Our

![]() | The Mission Today Today
the huge city of Los Angeles surrounds Mission San Gabriel Arcangel.
Many visitors came to see Mission San Gabriel Arcangel's fortress-style
church, and it's museum, buildings, gardens, and campunario. The
mission system ended when Mexico fought Spain and won. They won in 1821
but the war started in 1810. They fought for eleven years. The Mexican
government thought that the missions weren't needed anymore and the
Native Americans shouldn't be forced to live in the mission. The land
was given to the people in the Mexican governement. The missions changed California in many different ways. The Spanish missionaries brought ideas and skills to California such as making cloth, soap, and adobe bricks. They also changed California's economy from hunter gatherer to farming or agricultural. They also brought Catholic beliefs and religion, the Spanish language, and new technologies. They brought horses to California and the missions influenced they way our buildings look (architecture). |
